Wellspring Data Limited, a pioneering Software as a Service (SaaS) startup specializing in cardiac health management in incubation at Empowered Startups, announces a strategic partnership with the University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME). This collaboration aims to revolutionize cardiovascular health monitoring through cutting-edge research and innovative technology solutions. This a critical issue for Canadians, as cardiac (or heart) disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada and 1 in 12 (or 2.6 million) Canadian adults age 20+ living with diagnosed cardiac disease.
Wellspring Data, founded by CEO Kin Man Tung, is dedicated to empowering individuals at risk of cardiac heart disease through real-time data monitoring and transfer. Its flagship product, Pulsia, facilitates seamless communication between commercial wearables and healthcare professionals, offering insights into critical heart indicators.
The University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is renowned for its multidisciplinary approach to healthcare challenges. With a focus on engineering, medicine, and dentistry collaboration, BME is at the forefront of biomedical innovation. Dr. Shehroz Kahn, a leading researcher in digital health AI, and Dr. Milad Lankarany, a leading researcher in signal processing wearable technologies, will supervise the research from the University of Toronto.
Wellspring Data and the University of Toronto’s BME institute will embark on a 2-year research project to further digital health innovation in Canada by studying how commercial wearable data can be used to improve health outcomes. By leveraging artificial intelligence and data analytics, the partnership seeks to enable early detection and diagnosis of various heart-related disorders, including arrhythmia, coronary artery occlusion, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and hypertension.
“This partnership represents a significant step forward in our mission to improve cardiac health outcomes,” said Kin Man Tung, CEO of Wellspring Data. “By combining our expertise in analytics and dashboards with the cutting-edge research capabilities of the University of Toronto’s BME institute, we aim to deliver innovative solutions that empower individuals to take control of their heart health.”
Facilitated by Empowered Startups, this partnership is another example of how incoming entrepreneurs working with Canadian Universities for research and development can create more innovation in Canada, funding for universities, and more robust technology startups.
Dr. Shehroz Khan expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “This project is a perfect example of how the collaboration between academia and industry enables research to be taken from the lab to real-world settings. It is an incredible opportunity for students to be trained under industry and academic mentorship and develop skills to be successful in their careers.”
The research partnership between Wellspring Data and the University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering underscores a shared commitment to advancing cardiovascular health monitoring and improving patient outcomes. The two organizations aim to drive meaningful progress in digital health by harnessing the power of technology and collaboration.
The research project underwent a rigorous review process and has been partially funded through the NSERC Alliance program. Wellspring and NSERC’s funding will contribute $148,500 in direct funding, and Wellspring will commit an estimated additional $200,000 in in-kind contributions for post-secondary research.
